Soil is heavier than potting mix and requires more frequent watering. Soil tends to cake up when dry and may not have the required plant nutrients.

How can I increase the drainage of my potting mix?

Ingredients like perlite and light expandable clay aggregates (LECA) create air space and porosity when you add them to a potting mix. Good indoor plant soil does four things well.

It holds enough water so the plant does not dry out between waterings
